while I have always loved doing things that were eco-friendly/natural and saved me some money, lately with more awareness to both areas, I have been on the hunt for those great household tips. During my entrecard drops I came across the Health To Home blog written by Shawn, a stay at home mom of three. She posted a recipe for Homemade fabric softner! I am going to do this! I already use a lot of baking soda and vinegar in some of my cleaning chores and I know how well it works. I had a bout of not being able to get the sour smell out of my towels a few summers ago when we had a heat wave and high humidity. I used vinegar in all of my laundry loads, and cleaned out my washing machine with vinegar and it did the trick! Anyway, I love using fabric softner. I love for my clothes to be soft and to smell good! Lavender and vanilla are my favorite scents for softner, so that is what I will use to scent my batch of homemade softner. So, for the eco-friendly-thrifty domestic goddess, here is the recipe: Homemade Fabric Softener One part vinegar One part baking soda Two parts hot water Essential oil (Any scent you like and as much as needed to appeal to you) Add the baking soda to the hot water and stir until dissolved completely. Make sure you're using a big enough bucket/bowl to accommodate for the fizzing action caused by mixing the vinegar and baking soda. It'll fizz like a soda that's shook up. When the baking soda is dissolved, add the vinegar and stir until the fizzing action stops. Add a few drops of the essential oil to suit your taste (this step is optional and may be skipped if you prefer no scent at all). Stir to mix and then pour into a container to store. Use about a 1/4 cup for each load in the fabric softener dispenser or in a Downy ball. This recipe will soften your clothes better than any store bought fabric softener can, it's much better for you and the environment, and it's much cheaper! Let me know if you have any great household tips to help out our precious planet and your wallet! And go stop by and say Hi to Shawn, she has a great site.

These are great ideas on homemade fabric softener? Can I share something? Do you want to get rid of stains on your clothes the natural way? Use powdered oyster shells! Clean these oysters shells thoroughly then let them dry out in the sun for one day. Then, crush them into fine powder and when it’s done, immerse an area of a cloth with stain on water with powdered oyster shells and in as little as one hour, the stains are gone- 100%!
This is a great idea… thanks for sharing. I can’t wait to try it out myself.
Has any tried this and if so does it work as well as commercial products?
Hi. Well…. I don’t know what I did wrong… the Arm & Hammor Washing bakeing soda never realy disolved, even after a stirred vigorously and boiled. Maybe the next time I will try regular cooking Bakeing Soda. I put in the essential oil and am going to use this anyway I will just shake up my bottle before I pour it into the machine. Cant wait to see to see the results. Thanks for the recipe.

I just started making my own fabric softener. Luv It!!! But I also love the smell that Downey left on my clothes. No matter how much essential oils I use it still doesn’t leave a smell. Any other ideas. And also one of the things I like about making my own fabric softener is the cost. And essential oils are expensive….at least the kind I found.
Interesting read,
I wonder how well this works. It seems like vinegar has so many great uses, like taking out carpet stains with an iron and damp cloth. i don’t use softener9 too costly ) so this might help a bit on the expenses, heck i am a guy and my clothes don’t need to be soft lol.
P.S. i really like your site layout it is pretty cool!
I believe i never waste my time reading your post because it’s worth it. I will try to do the home fabric softener because it will help me to save money and the environment. Good idea!
This is a terrific idea. I have been looking all over for a way to keep the clothes soft but still avoid chemicals. I also love the idea of using essential oils whenever I can because of all their health benefits. Thanks!
Thank you! Very interesting information in this blog, I will return often.
There are many fabric softener in the market. I need to admit that it’s hard to find what you like. This Homemade fabric softener is a good idea. I will take note about this and try my own, if i have time. Great job for posting this!
